Does beer prevent kidney stones? - #11908

Kian

I am really confused and a bit worried about my health lately. I went to my doc last week because I’ve been having these pesky painful kidney stones, and I'm honestly scared about getting them again. I remember chatting with a friend who said that beer might actually help prevent kidney stones because it could somehow dilute the urine or something like that. I mean, I love a good beer after a long day, but is that really true? Does beer prevent kidney stones or is that just a myth? My doc didn’t mention anything about beer as a way to keep those nasty stones at bay which got me thinking like, should I be incorporating it more into my diet? Or would that just make things worse? Also, I heard about how hydration is super important for preventing them, but would drinking beer count as hydration? I'm just really not sure what to do here. I’m worried that if I drink it to try and prevent kidney stones, it might backfire and cause me even more problems. Has anybody else heard if does beer prevent kidney stones, or does it just create more issues? Would love to hear your thoughts.

Beer is sometimes mentioned in discussions about preventing kidney stones, but the idea that it helps prevent them is a bit of a myth. While moderate consumption might lead to temporary increased urine production, which in turn might reduce kidney stone formation by flushing out small crystals before they form into stones, the alcohol in beer can have other effects that are less beneficial. It’s important to remember that alcohol can contribute to dehydration, especially if consumed in larger amounts, which might actually increase your risk for stones over time. Drinking beer also adds empty calories to your diet, potentially leading to other health issues if not balanced correctly.

For preventing kidney stones, the primary focus should really be on staying hydrated, but the type of fluid matters. Water is the best option—aim for at least 2.5 to 3 liters per day, depending on your other medical conditions or lifestyle factors. While some fluids like citrus juices can be beneficial due to their citrate content, which helps prevent certain kinds of stones, beer doesn’t offer the same type of benefits. Additionally, be cautious of your diet: reducing salt, protein, and oxalate-rich foods (like spinach, nuts, and tea) can help if you’re prone to stones.

If you’ve had kidney stones in the past and you’re worried about recurrence, I recommend following up with your healthcare provider. They might consider running tests, like a urine collection or a blood test, to determine the composition of your stones and tailor a prevention strategy specific for you. As always, before making any significant dietary or lifestyle changes, especially ones involving alcohol, it’s best to consult with your doctor to ensure it’s safe considering your health profile.
