Liver pain symptoms - #12194

Muhammad

I am really worried about this liver pain symptoms thing I’ve been dealing with. For the past couple of weeks, I’ve been feeling this dull ache in my right side, like just under my ribs. At first, I thought maybe it was something I ate but then it got worse. I started feeling really bloated and I’ve noticed my skin looking kind of yellowish — freaky, right? My friends are saying it could be liver pain symptoms, but I don’t know what to believe. I also feel fatigued and just overall weird. I went to the urgent care last week, and they did some basic tests but said everything looked fine, which is puzzling given what I’m feeling. They said if the liver pain symptoms don’t go away to follow up with my family doc, but I keep thinking the worst! Like what if it’s something serious? What kind of liver pain symptoms should I really look out for? Honestly, any advice on what I might be experiencing or what to ask the doctors would help. I'm just scared and want to know if this could be serious, or if it's just something simple that can go away on its own.

Doctors’ responses

When experiencing symptoms like a dull ache under the right ribs, bloating, jaundice (the yellowing of the skin or eyes), and fatigue, it’s understandable to feel concerned. These are indeed potential indicators of liver issues, which require careful evaluation as they can signal various conditions ranging from relatively mild to quite serious. While the urgent care results were described as normal, it’s crucial to follow up with your primary care doctor who can order more specific tests and imaging if necessary.

Liver pain symptoms can arise from conditions such as hepatitis, fatty liver disease, liver cirrhosis, or even biliary issues such as gallstones. Jaundice, especially, is a red-flag symptom suggesting elevated bilirubin levels, often linked to liver dysfunction or blockages in the bile duct system. Fatigue and discomfort are more non-specific but do align with liver disturbances.

You should ask your doctor about further evaluations like liver function tests (LFTs), which measure proteins and enzymes that indicate how well your liver is working. An abdominal ultrasound or CT scan may be recommended to visually assess your liver for any abnormalities.

While some liver conditions, like mild fatty liver, can improve with lifestyle adjustments such as diet changes, reducing alcohol intake, and managing weight, other more serious conditions require medical intervention. This can include medications or procedures, depending on the root cause.

In the meantime, focus on avoiding alcohol, monitoring your symptoms, and documenting any changes or additional symptoms to share with your doctor. If you notice severe symptoms such as intense pain, confusion or increased jaundice, please seek immediate medical attention. Being proactive with these symptoms is important, given the potential implications on your health.
