can papaya prevent pregnancy?

Diya

I am really confused about something and need some help from you doctors. Last week, I was at a friend's place and we were having, like, a casual convo about health stuff. She mentioned that she heard papaya can prevent pregnancy. I mean, it kind of blew my mind, right? I’ve always loved papaya, but now I'm wondering if eating papaya could actually affect pregnancy? I’ve been a bit worried since then, because I'm, you know, trying to plan out my future and all, but not just yet! The thing is, I also read somewhere that there are some traditional beliefs around papaya when it comes to birth control, but then on the flip side, I found info that said it’s totally a myth. Like, can eating papaya really prevent pregnancy, or is that just an old wives' tale? Is there any actual science backing this up? I can't help but think about how many people might be misinformed about it. Plus, if papaya isn't reliable, what other natural options are there? I'm just kinda stressing over this whole topic, and would love to hear what you all think. Can papaya prevent pregnancy for real, or should I just stick to conventional methods?

Doctors' responses

There is no solid scientific evidence to suggest that eating papaya can reliably prevent pregnancy. This belief mostly originates from traditional practices and anecdotal reports, but as with many such claims, lacks the backing of rigorous clinical trials. Raw or semi-ripe papaya contains an enzyme called papain, which some suggest might interfere with hormone levels when consumed in large quantities. However, neither the dosage nor the impact is well-documented to have any meaningful contraceptive effect. Therefore, it’s not advisable to rely on papaya as a method of preventing pregnancy. Contraception is a critical aspect of reproductive health planning; hence it’s important to choose methods that are proven to be effective and reliable. Modern contraceptive options abound, including hormonal contraceptives (like the pill, patch, or injections), barrier methods (such as condoms), and long-acting reversible contraceptives like IUDs, among others. Each of these options has different effectiveness rates and potential side effects, so it’s best to consult with a healthcare provider who can help you find the one that suits your lifestyle and health best. As for natural methods, while options like fertility awareness can be considered, they require careful tracking and discipline to be effective. If you are looking for reliable birth control methods, it’s essential to rely on medically verified options. If you have further concerns or are trying to manage fertility naturally, seeking advice from a healthcare specialist would be the best course of action.
