homemade pregnancy test

Vanya

I am really curious about homemade pregnancy test options because I've been feeling off lately. My cycle is late, and I went through a whole emotional rollercoaster last month, you know? I tried one of those store-bought tests, but it came back negative, and I just can’t shake this feeling. Some friends have mentioned they used a homemade pregnancy test when they were in my situation, and it worked for them. Like, I heard about the sugar method and even the one with toothpaste? But honestly, I’m a bit skeptical about all this homemade pregnancy test stuff. What if they’re not reliable? Plus, I wanna know how they all work -- like, do they really detect hCG, or are they just myths? I feel like, if they were good, more people would know about them, right? I just wanna be sure and not waste time on something that doesn’t actually help. Any thoughts or experiences with a homemade pregnancy test you can share? I’m kind of stressed with all this uncertainty and just want to know if I should trust those methods or maybe just wait for my doctor’s appointment. Thanks!

Doctors' responses

Homemade pregnancy tests, like the ones involving sugar or toothpaste, are not reliable. There’s no scientific evidence that these tests can accurately detect hCG, the hormone produced during pregnancy. Many of these methods have gained popularity through anecdotes rather than scientific backing. The chemicals involved in homemade tests don’t reliably interact with hCG in any detectable way. You could end up with misleading results, which could prolong uncertainty and stress. If you’ve already done a store-bought test and it came back negative, but you’re sure something’s off, it’s better to go for a blood test at your doctor’s office, which can provide a more accurate result. Sometimes home tests might not pick up the hormone levels if they’re still low early in pregnancy. It’s not unusual for life changes or stress to delay a cycle, too. If your period remains absent or irregular, continue keep an eye on any new symptoms. Though these homemade methods might sound intriguing or fun, you’re on the right track to be skeptical. Stick with options that are known to work. For now, make a note of any changes and bring them up at your appointment. Until then, try to manage stress, rest adequately, and maintain a balanced diet, as these can also influence your cycle.
