in loose motion what to drink - #13109

Yash

I am really worried because I’ve been feeling awful with my stomach lately. A few days ago I started experiencing really bad cramps and, well, now I can’t stop having loose motion! It’s been like 6-7 times a day and I’m feeling totally drained. I tried staying hydrated with just water, but it doesn't seem to help at all. What should I be drinking though? Like, in loose motion what to drink to really help? I heard something about electrolyte drinks, but is that even okay? I’ve tried some flavored ones, but honestly, I think the sugars are making it worse. Should I just stick to plain water, or get some coconut water instead? I kind of feel like anything I put in makes the loose motion worse, but I know I have to drink something. Plus, I can’t remember if I read that warm drinks help or if that’s just wishful thinking. If anyone’s been through this, what helped you? Just trying to get back to normal here!

Doctors’ responses

When you’re dealing with loose motion, staying properly hydrated is key because you’re losing a lot of fluids and electrolytes. Water alone isn’t always enough because it doesn’t replace the lost sodium and potassium. Rehydration solutions, like oral rehydration salts (ORS), can be very effective. You can find ORS at most pharmacies; they’re specially formulated to replenish fluids and electrolytes in the appropriate balance. If those aren’t available, an alternative is a homemade solution: mix six teaspoons of sugar with half a teaspoon of salt in one liter of clean water. You need to drink small amounts frequently rather than trying to consume large quantities at once.

Though some flavored electrolyte drinks seem tempting, many have high sugar content that can exacerbate diarrhea. If these drinks are your only option and are low in sugar, they may be worthwhile in moderation. Coconut water can be a good natural choice as it contains some electrolytes, but be cautious with how much you drink, since excessive coconut water can sometimes aggravate symptoms due to its high potassium.

Warm beverages like herbal teas or broths can also be gentle on your stomach. They won’t necessarily stop the diarrhea, but they help with hydration and might settle your stomach. Avoid caffeine and alcohol as these can worsen dehydration. If your symptoms persist beyond a couple of days, or if you’re experiencing severe dehydration signs like dizziness, seek medical help promptly. You should also consider seeing a healthcare provider if there’s any blood in your stools or if the symptoms come with a high fever to rule out any other underlying conditions.
