pomegranate good for loose motion - #13239

Saanvi

I am trying to figure out if pomegranate is good for loose motion, because for the last few days, I've been dealing with, like, this terrible stomach issue. It all started after I ate some street food, which was probably not the best idea. Anyway, I’ve been running to the bathroom way too much, and it's just exhausting. A friend mentioned that pomegranate can help with loose motion, but I’m not sure how true that is. I even saw some articles online saying that it has properties that could bind things up? But then I read something else saying it could make it worse for some people. Ugh, it’s confusing! I tried eating some pomegranate seeds yesterday, thinking it might help, but I honestly felt a little uneasy after. I don’t know if that was a coincidence or something. Also, should I stick to just the seeds, or is drinking pomegranate juice better when dealing with loose motion? Like, how do I even know what works? I just want to feel normal again and, like, stop this cycle. Any ideas or experiences with pomegranate being good for loose motion? Really need some guidance on this before I go crazy.

Doctors’ responses

Pomegranate is often talked about as a natural remedy for diarrhea due to its potential astringent properties, which can help firm up stools and reduce frequency. The peel and the white membrane of the fruit are traditionally thought to have more binding effects due to higher tannin content, rather than the seeds or the juice. While pomegranate seeds provide fiber, which is generally good for digestion, eating too many may cause some individuals to feel more bloated or uneasy, especially if your stomach is already sensitive. Drinking pomegranate juice might not provide the same binding effects, and for some people, the sugar content can potentially worsen loose motions, especially if you’re sensitive to fructose. While some people report benefits, it’s worthwhile being cautious. The most important thing is to stay properly hydrated; use rehydration solutions if you’re experiencing frequent bathroom trips to avoid dehydration. To monitor symptoms closely, notice any changes after consuming pomegranate. If it’s not improving or symptoms persist, considering consulting a healthcare provider, as persistent diarrhea might need medical intervention, and also to rule out any possible underlying infections, especially after eating street food. Meanwhile, stick to a bland, low-fiber diet, avoid dairy, caffeine, and greasy foods, and stay rested. If symptoms worsen or if there’re signs of dehydration or high fever, seek medical attention promptly.
