how to remove stains from face - #14222

Reet

I am really struggling with these pesky stains on my face! A couple weeks ago, I tried this new skincare product that was supposed to brighten my skin, but instead, it left these weird dark patches on my cheeks and forehead. I thought it would clear up, but nope! I’ve been washing my face like crazy, trying scrubs and all that, but nothing's working. I even searched online for how to remove stains from face, but the tips seem all over the place, and I’m getting kinda overwhelmed, ya know? Some say use lemon juice which sounds super harsh, and others mention baking soda, but I don’t wanna put anything too rough, just to make it worse. It’s like I'm worried I made my skin worse with all this trial and error. I feel like I see them more in certain lighting too, like when I’m in my car or something. Could anyone share how to remove stains from face without making it worse? I’m even wondering if I should just give my skin a break and not do anything for a while? Should I see a skin specialist or just keep trying home remedies? Any help would be great!

Doctors’ responses

It sounds like you might be dealing with post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, which can happen if a product irritates your skin, resulting in these annoying dark patches. First, you should stop using the product that caused the reaction and avoid harsh scrubbing or aggressive treatments for the time being as they could worsen the skin barrier. Giving your skin a little break to recover might be a good start, especially since over-treating might lead to further irritation. For tackling the dark patches, a gentle and gradual approach is best. Look for over-the-counter products containing ingredients like niacinamide, which can help brighten skin tone and reduce hyperpigmentation. Vitamin C is another option that can help lighten dark marks through its antioxidant properties, but it can be a little irritating for some, so do a patch test before applying it widely on your face. When incorporating new products, introduce them one at a time to see how your skin reacts. Crucially, always use sunscreen during the day, ideally broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher, since UV rays can make hyperpigmentation worse. If the patches persist or you’re concerned they might stem from another underlying condition, consider consulting a dermatologist. They can offer treatments like chemical peels, laser therapy, or prescribe stronger topical treatments tailored to your specific needs. Meanwhile, avoid DIY remedies like lemon juice or baking soda, as they could further irritate your skin. Keeping your skin-care routine simple and focusing on healing and protection is your best bet.
