does baking soda lighten skin - #15261

Kimaya

I am really curious about this whole thing with baking soda and skin lightening. So, a few weeks ago, I started noticing these dark spots on my face, not sure if it's from aging or sun exposure or what. Anyway, a friend mentioned that baking soda can help with skin discoloration and lighten dark spots. I was like, really? I thought baking soda was just for baking and cleaning! Anyway, I mixed up a little paste with water and used it a couple of times, but my skin feels kinda dry after. Does baking soda lighten skin? I mean, I've seen some youtube videos that say it works wonders and others acting like it can be harsh. I don't want to burn my face or anything, but I'm desperate to find something that actually works. How often should I be using it if it does lighten skin or is there a better way to go about this? Should I be worried about any side effects like irritation or something worse? I just wanna know if it's worth sticking with, or if I should put the baking soda back in the kitchen instead of on my face. Anyone with experience, please share your thoughts!

Doctors’ responses

Baking soda is not an effective or recommended solution for skin lightening or treating dark spots. Although some anecdotal accounts suggest it might have exfoliating effects, the reality is that baking soda is alkaline with a pH level that can disrupt the skin’s natural barrier. This disruption can lead to dryness, irritation, and potentially worsening of your skin issues. The dryness you’re experiencing is indicative of this adverse effect. While exfoliation can sometimes help improve skin appearance, using baking soda can be too harsh and may even cause more harm than good. It’s critical to note that skin reactions vary from person to person, and prolonged use might lead to increased sensitivity or other complications.

For addressing dark spots or hyperpigmentation in a more effective manner, consider options that are both grounded in dermatological science and proven safe. Products containing ingredients like vitamin C, retinoids, glycolic acid, or niacinamide have been shown to help lighten dark spots and improve skin tone over time. Always start with a patch test and introduce any new product gradually into your routine. Consistency is key in these treatments, and it might take several weeks to notice improvements. Additionally, protecting your skin from further sun damage using daily sunscreen — at least SPF 30 — is crucial to prevent existing spots from becoming darker and new ones from forming.

If over-the-counter treatments don’t show results, consult a dermatologist to explore targeted treatments such as chemical peels, laser therapy, or prescription topical treatments specifically tailored to your skin type and condition. If you ever experience severe irritation or suspect an allergic reaction, discontinue use immediately and seek medical advice. Remember, it’s always a good idea to approach skin concerns by consulting with healthcare professionals, who can guide you toward safe and personalized care.
