loose motion home remedies for 3 year old baby - #16706

Hriday

I am realy worried about my little one. My 3 year old has been having loose motions for the past couple of days, and it’s honestly been pretty stressful. It started out as just a few watery stools, but now it seems like it’s getting worse. He’s been acting a bit lethargic and isn’t eating much, which is super concerning. I took him to the doc, and they said to keep him hydrated, but I’m looking for some natural ways to help with these loose motions. Are there any effective loose motion home remedies for 3 year old baby that I can try to help settle his stomach? Someone mentioned bananas and rice, but honestly, I don’t really know how much of that he should be having or if there are other options I can mix in. I read online about probiotics, but are they safe for little ones with loose motions? Should I be avoiding any specific foods or drinks? I just feel like I need to act quickly to help him out, and I don’t want to keep running to the doctor for every little thing. Any tips or advice would be super appreciated, thanks!

Doctors’ responses

Home remedies can indeed be helpful for managing mild cases of loose motions in children, but it’s paramount to keep an eye on any signs of serious dehydration or other concerning symptoms. First things first, as your doctor wisely noted, maintaining hydration is vital. You can continue that by offering your child oral rehydration solutions (ORS), which are specifically made to replace fluids and electrolytes lost during diarrhea. For natural remedies, the renowned BRAT diet is worth considering: Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, and Toast. These foods are bland and can help firm stools. You mentioned bananas; they provide essential nutrients like potassium and can be part of your child’s diet. Give small portions balanced throughout the day. Rice, particularly white rice, is easy on the stomach and might help slow down bowel movements.

About probiotics, they’re generally considered safe for children. Yogurt with live cultures could be beneficial, just offer it in small quantities to see how your child’s stomach handles it. Still, if diarrhea persists or gets worse, consult your healthcare provider about using probiotic supplements. Regarding dietary considerations, make sure your child avoids sugary juices or sodas, as these can exacerbate loose stools. Also, steer clear of fatty or seasoned foods until things settle down. If your child becomes increasingly lethargic, develops a high fever, exhibits blood in their stools, or has symptoms of dehydration such as sunken eyes or excessive thirst, seek medical care promptly. Keeping a close eye on his overall condition and adjusting his diet and hydration levels accordingly should help. Don’t hesitate to return to medical professionals if the situation doesn’t improve or if you’re unsure about any signs you might observe.
