how to strengthen kidney - #16737

Kavya

I am really worried about my kidney health and just realized I need to know how to strengthen kidney function! For the past few months, I've been feeling super fatigued and have had these weird back pains, which I thought was just from sitting too long at work. But then I started noticing that I was frequenting the bathroom way more often, and my urine seemed way darker than normal. I got some blood tests done, and my doctor said my creatinine levels were a bit high, which really freaked me out. I've tried to drink more water, but honestly, I don't know how to strengthen kidney on my own. I've heard about dietary changes and vitamins, but it’s all kinda confusing. Like, should I cut out salt completely? What about fruits and veggies? I've also read that certain herbs can help, but is that legit? My aunt keeps saying drinking cranberry juice is a good way to strengthen kidney function, but I’m hesitant to rely on just that. Anyone have real advice? What did you do when you were in a similar boat? I just want to make sure I’m doing the right things, I feel like I need a game plan on how to strengthen kidney health for the long haul...

Doctors' responses

To strengthen kidney function and address symptoms like fatigue, back pain, and high creatinine, start by focusing on hydration and diet. Drinking enough water—generally around 8 to 10 cups a day—helps kidneys filter waste. However, balance is key; don’t overconsume, as that can strain kidneys too. Monitor urine color; a light yellow is usually optimal. Dietary changes can also make a significant difference. Limit salt intake to help maintain blood pressure, vital for kidney health, but you don’t need to eliminate it entirely. Focus on a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains; these provide essential nutrients and antioxidants. Aim for low potassium foods if advised by a doctor, especially if creatinine levels are high. Medical advice often recommends reducing protein intake because excess protein can stress the kidneys, so consult a nutritionist for tailored advice on this. Regarding vitamins and herbs, some evidence suggests that vitamin D and omega-3s support kidney health, but always discuss supplements with a healthcare provider to avoid interactions. While cranberry juice is often mentioned, it’s more specific to urinary tract health rather than directly strengthening kidneys. It’s wise to consult your doctor regarding any supplements or herbal remedies. Managing blood pressure and blood sugar levels is crucial if you have conditions like hypertension or diabetes; both can worsen kidney function over time. Regular exercise, at least 30 minutes most days, helps maintain overall health and supports kidney function. Don’t ignore persistent symptoms like dark urine or frequent bathroom trips, as they may indicate a need for medical evaluation. Follow up on blood tests to monitor creatinine and other kidney-related markers. If creatinine levels stay elevated, further investigation or a visit to a nephrologist may be warranted. Lifestyle changes can take time to show effects, so remain patient but proactive.
