how to cure intestinal infection - #17091

Khushi

I am dealing with some really uncomfortable stuff right now and just need some advice on how to cure intestinal infection. For the past week, I've been having crazy stomach cramps, bloating like there's no tomorrow, and, not to get too graphic, but the bathroom visits are just relentless! I ate at this new place in town, and I'm starting to think that maybe was a huge mistake. The doc I saw said I might have an intestinal infection. They did some tests but said it might take a few days for results. In the meantime, I’m just stuck wondering how to cure intestinal infection before I lose all my patience. I’ve tried some home remedies like ginger tea and probiotics, but nothing feels like it’s working. Sometimes it feels like I can't even eat without it hurting, and I can't figure out what to do. Any suggestions from people who have dealt with this? Like, are antibiotics the way to go, or can someone actually cure an intestinal infection just with diet? Really appreciate any tips on how to cure intestinal infection that actually worked for you!

Doctors’ responses

Dealing with an intestinal infection can indeed be quite uncomfortable. The first thing is to make sure you’re staying hydrated, especially if you’re experiencing diarrhea or vomiting, as this can lead to dehydration. Drink plenty of water and consider oral rehydration solutions to maintain electrolyte balance. While you’re waiting for the lab results, avoid problematic foods that might irritate your gut further—this includes dairy, spicy foods, caffeine, and alcohol. Stick to bland, easily digestible foods like bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast (commonly known as the BRAT diet). Regarding ginger tea and probiotics, these can be helpful in soothing minor symptoms, but for a full-blown intestinal infection, depending on what’s causing it (bacterial vs viral), more targeted treatments may be necessary. If your infection is bacterial, antibiotics could be effective, but it’s vital to wait for your doctor’s recommendations, as unnecessary use might worsen things if it’s viral or cause antibiotic resistance. Continue with your probiotics, as they can help restore the natural balance of gut bacteria. Pay attention to any red flags like high fever, persistent vomiting, blood in stools, or severe abdominal pain, which would require immediate attention from a healthcare provider. Rest, keep hydrated, and maintain a close dialogue with your doctor while awaiting those test results, and follow their advice once you have a definite diagnosis. Please avoid starting antibiotics or any new treatment without consulting your healthcare professional.
