gas release from stomach - #17940

Kashvi

I am feeling super uncomfortable and honestly kinda confused about this gas release from stomach situation. Like, for the past week, I’ve been experiencing some weird bloating and these loud gurgling sounds, and it’s not just embarrassing but painful too. Sometimes it feels like I’m carrying a balloon in there! I thought maybe it was something I ate, but I’ve been really careful. I made chicken soup from scratch, no weird spices or greasy stuff. I did a cookie binge one day and regretted it massively, but still, can that really cause all this gas release from stomach? I've tried Pepcid, thinking it was acid causing the problem, but I don’t really think that’s the issue here. My friend mentioned it could be stress causing my stomach to go all crazy, but can stress actually lead to excessive gas release from stomach? Like, I thought it had to be food related or something. I’m getting frustrated cause it’s impacting my work too -- can’t focus when I feel like a walking science experiment. Is there something I should be looking into? Any tests or stuff you'd recommend? I just wanna feel normal again!

Doctors' responses

It sounds like you’re dealing with some uncomfortable digestive symptoms. While diet can certainly play a role in gas production, it’s not the only factor. Stress is indeed known to impact digestion, potentially increasing gas and bloating, due to the gut-brain axis connection. Your gut has a complex nervous system that can respond to stress by altering motility, sensitivity, and secretion, which might lead to the symptoms you’re describing. However, it’s also important to consider other potential causes. Conditions like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), food intolerances (such as lactose or gluten), or small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) can present with similar symptoms. Drinking carbonated drinks, eating quickly and swallowing air can also contribute to symptoms. Since you’re seeking relief, you might start by keeping a food and symptom diary to identify any potential dietary triggers. This can help point out specific foods or patterns linked to your symptoms. Meanwhile, try practices that might help manage stress, such as mindfulness or gentle yoga, which can benefit your digestive health too. If the symptoms persist or worsen, it’s a good idea to visit a healthcare provider. They might recommend tests like a lactose tolerance test, breath test for SIBO, or other investigations based on your detailed history and symptoms. They may consider medications or dietary modifications tailored to your specific condition, but those should be guided by their evaluation. It’s essential to understand the underlying cause of these symptoms to effectively manage them.
