after loose motion what to eat - #18734

Aadhyant

I am feeling really sort of lost after having a terrible bout of loose motions last week. It hit me all of a sudden during work, and I ended up spending half the day in the restroom, ugh! The next day I was so exhausted and had zero energy, my stomach was a mess. The doc said it was likely a stomach bug and recommended hydration but didn’t really give me a clear answer on what to eat. Now I’m trying to figure out what to eat after loose motion because my stomach still feels a bit off, and I don’t want to make it worse. Should I stick to plain rice and bananas? I tried some toast but felt a bit queasy after, like, maybe too much too soon? I also heard about probiotic yogurts but not sure when to add them in. After loose motion, what to eat that won’t upset my stomach again? I really want to get my energy back and not end up in the bathroom again, you know? It’s frustrating, any tips from you guys?

After a bout of loose motions, it’s essential to give your digestive system a break while gradually reintroducing foods that are gentle and easily digestible. Start with the BRAT diet, which stands for Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, and Toast. These foods are bland and low in fiber, which can help solidify stools. Plain rice is a good idea, but avoid heavy spices or rich sauces. Bananas are helpful due to their potassium content, which can be depleted in diarrhea episodes. Toast (preferably white bread at first) can be easy on your stomach, but it seems it didn’t sit well with you, so give it a miss for now.

Once you feel a bit more stable, you can think about adding plain, low-fat yogurt with live cultures or probiotic yogurt, as probiotics can help restore healthy gut bacteria. Start with small amounts and see how your stomach reacts. Some other options include boiled potatoes, plain chicken or turkey, and clear broths. Avoid dairy products (except yogurt), fatty foods, caffeine, alcohol, and high-fiber foods initially, as they can irritate the digestive system.

For hydration, continue drinking fluids like water or oral rehydration solutions that can replenish electrolytes. Herbal teas like chamomile or ginger may be soothing, but avoid anything heavily caffeinated. If the symptoms persist or worsen, or if you experience additional symptoms like a high fever or bloody stools, it’s prudent to see a healthcare provider for further evaluation. Gradually, as your stomach settles, you can return to a more regular diet, listening to your body’s cues and ensuring you’re eating balanced meals to regain your energy.
