foods for dengue patient - #18943

Shivam

I am really worried about my brother, he just got diagnosed with dengue last week. He has been feeling super weak and has had this really high fever that just won’t go down. He’s been in the hospital for a few days now, and they keep telling us to make sure he eats well, but I’m like, what are the best foods for a dengue patient? I mean, I know hydration is important, but what are the actual foods for dengue patients that will help him recover faster? I’ve heard that fruits like papaya and pomegranate can be good but I’m not sure about how he can incorporate them into meals. Also, should he be eating rice? Some nurse said something about avoiding heavy foods but I'm at a loss here, is plain rice ok? Ugh, I just want to do everything right! Anyone have any suggestions on what foods for dengue patients are really effective? Also, is there a specific diet plan or something he should follow? Trying to figure this out quickly as I want to bring him something nutritious when I visit. Any tips from those who've been through it would mean a lot!

For someone recovering from dengue, it’s crucial to focus on hydration and nutrient-rich foods that are easy to digest and can help boost the immune system. First, emphasize fluids such as water, coconut water, and electrolyte solutions to maintain hydration—a key aspect in dengue recovery. Fluids support kidney function in managing the effects of the illness, especially when fever leads to dehydration.

Regarding solid food, opt for light, nutritious options that are easy on the digestive system. Papaya and pomegranate are indeed beneficial: papaya can support platelet production (though mechanism is not fully understood) and pomegranate provides antioxidants. Offer these fruits directly or blend them into smoothies. Rice is generally okay in moderation since it’s easy to digest. Stick to plain white rice or rice porridge as heavy, rich foods can be harder to process. This pairs well with boiled vegetables or lentil soups for added nutrients.

Consider small, frequent meals to avoid overwhelming his system. Protein sources like lean chicken soup or tofu can be included but keep it bland to prevent irritation. Incorporation of vegetables such as carrots, spinach, and cucumbers add fiber and vitamins. Avoid oily and spicy foods which may exacerbate symptoms. And as for a specific diet plan—it’s more about balanced nutrition and plenty of fluids rather than strict rules. Monitor his appetite and tolerance, adjusting types and amounts based on his reaction. Keep in contact with the medical team for personalized guidance suited to his evolving condition, and insist on contacting them should there be any signs of severe symptoms or worsening.
