acne pits on face - #20592

Atharv

I am dealing with some really frustrating acne pits on my face. Like, back when I was a teen, I had the worst breakouts, and now I’m left with these pits that won't go away. It feels like no matter what I try, the acne pits on my face just stay there, and I'm not sure if I should be doing something different. I mean, I’ve tried creams, and even went to this dermatologist who suggested laser treatment, but I’m nervous about that. Did any of you have luck with acne pits on face treatments? Just last week, I looked in the mirror and it's like a whole landscape of scars and pits and I can't shake off this feeling of frustration. Sometimes, I even think about why I didn't take better care of my skin when I had the chance. I wonder if there are things I can do at home or if the treatments are really worth it… like, are the results of anything long-lasting?? I guess I’m looking for any tips or experiences you all have had with acne pits on your face. Did you have success, or did some treatments just not work out? Thanks in advance for any insight!

Doctors' responses

When dealing with acne pits, also known as atrophic scars, it’s understandable to be frustrated, especially after trying different methods without seeing much improvement. While creams can help to some extent, atrophic scars often require more intensive interventions. You mentioned considering laser treatments, and despite your reservations, they can be quite effective for achieving smoother skin. Fractional laser treatments, like Fraxel, work by promoting collagen production in the skin, which can help in improving the appearance of acne scars over multiple sessions, though the thought of procedures can be daunting, they are generally safe when performed by a qualified dermatologist. However, it’s crucial to have a clear understanding of the procedure, potential downtime, and any risks involved before proceeding. If you’re apprehensive, you might want to start exploring less invasive treatments, like microneedling, which also stimulates collagen and can improve skin texture over time. Another option could be chemical peels, which remove the top layers of the skin, thereby reducing the look of scars. Make sure to talk extensively with a dermatologist about these options to understand which would work best given your specific skin type. In terms of home care, maintaining a good skincare routine is key. Regular exfoliation with products containing alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) or beta hydroxy acids (BHAs) can assist in keeping your skin smooth. Incorporating a retinoid into your routine can also aid in skin turnover and scar reduction, though expect results take time and be gradual. Finally, sunscreen use is vital, as sun exposure can worsen the appearance of scars. Ultimately, while home treatments can support improvement, professional procedures often offer more significant results for acne scars. Don’t hesitate to express your concerns to your dermatologist; they can help evaluate your condition and suggest tailored treatment plans that are both effective and aligned with your comfort levels.
