when does pregnancy acne go away

Simran

I am really struggling with this pregnancy acne situation. I’m 25 weeks along and my face is kind of a mess right now, like all these random breakouts popped up from nowhere! I thought pregnancy would make my skin glow, not turn me into a teenager again. I keep reading online about when does pregnancy acne go away and it all seems super vague. My friends said it usually gets better after the first trimester, but I’m still fighting with this. I've tried gentle cleansers, and I drink water like it’s going out of style but nothing seems to help!! I feel like I just want to hide under a hat all the time. Also, is it normal for it to be worse some days than others? Like, one day I’ll feel like maybe it’s improving and then BAM! I wake up with new spots. Ughh! I was told by my doc that hormones play a huge role in this but it just seems unfair. When does pregnancy acne go away normally? I really hope I won't have to deal with this for the rest of my pregnancy! What's the typical timeline for improvement? Also, any tips to not go crazy during this would be appreciated!

Doctors' responses

Pregnancy acne typically results from hormonal fluctuations, and it’s driven by increased levels of certain hormones like progesterone. These can lead to more oil production in your skin, contributing to the infamous breakouts that you’re experiencing. Unfortunately, the timeline for when pregnancy acne clears up can be quite variable. For some women, it improves after the first trimester, but for others, it may persist throughout the entire pregnancy and may only improve post-delivery as hormone levels start to stabilize. This might sound frustrating, but it’s quite common to notice fluctuations, some days clearer and other days worse — this inconsistency is a normal part of the process due to hormonal changes that don’t follow a fixed pattern.

In terms of tips to help manage it, sticking with gentle skincare routines is crucial. Avoid over-washing your face as it can irritate your skin further; twice a day with a mild cleanser should suffice. Ensure you’re using non-comedogenic (non-pore-clogging) and fragrance-free products. Hydration is great, but also pay attention to your diet—eating a balanced diet low in refined sugars can sometimes help with skin clarity. That said, be careful not to make drastic dietary changes without consulting your healthcare provider. If you’re comfortable with it, some topical treatments like azelaic acid can be safe during pregnancy, but always check with your doctor before starting any new treatment. Also, don’t hesitate to touch base with your dermatologist or OB-GYN if your acne is causing significant distress or if you have concerns about any products you’re using. They can offer personalized advice, especially when over-the-counter solutions aren’t cutting it. And remember, the pregnancy glow isn’t a myth; it just sometimes takes a little while to shine through those hormonal ups and downs.
