is chanca piedra safe

Yash

I am really confused about this supplement I keep hearing about, chanca piedra. A friend mentioned it’s supposed to be good for kidney stones and I kinda want to try it because I’ve been dealing with some discomfort and my doc hinted at me possibly having stones. I've had this ongoing dull pain in my side for weeks now, honestly, it sometimes gets intense and I did some research and found that chanca piedra could help break them up. But, I’m wondering, is chanca piedra safe? Like, are there any side effects that I should be worried about? I’ve read mixed things online. Some people swear by it, saying it really helped them, while others mention nausea and even digestive issues after taking it. Plus, I've got a few health issues already, including asthma and a bit of high blood pressure, so I'm really cautious about what I put into my body. Anyone here had experience with this? What about interactions with other meds? Is chanca piedra safe for someone like me or should I avoid it completely? I feel stuck trying to find reliable info.

Doctors' responses

Chanca piedra, a traditional herbal remedy often used for kidney stones and liver health, has indeed produced mixed reactions in people who try it because, like many supplements, rigorous scientific studies on its effectiveness and safety are limited. It’s generally considered safe for most people when taken in recommended amounts, but there are definitely several factors to bear in mind, especially given your current health conditions and medications. You should approach cautiously since you already have asthma and high blood pressure. While there’s some evidence supporting chanca piedra’s ability to help break down kidney stones, understand that supplements can vary widely in terms of quality and concentration. In terms of side effects, nausea and digestive issues are relatively common complaints. More concerningly, there may be potential interactions with medications you might be taking for high blood pressure, as it could potentially lower blood pressure further. Moreover, chanca piedra may act as a diuretic, which could affect fluid and electrolyte balance, more so if you’re on other medications that can alter these levels. Given your health background, it’s crucial to consult your healthcare provider before starting chanca piedra. It’s important that they review your full medical history, current medication regimes, and symptoms to gauge any potential risks. Trying it without professional guidance could pose an avoidable risk, especially considering the pain you’re experiencing might hint at an undiagnosed issue that requires a proper diagnosis and any potential red-flag symptoms should never be ignored. Given that your pain sometimes gets intense, it would be wise to prioritize a thorough assessment from your doctor to understand the underlying causes better, over solely experimenting with supplements like chanca piedra.
