Refined oils are usually processed to remove impurities, free fatty acids, and other substances that could potentially be irritating or cause adverse reactions in sensitive individuals. Some people find that unrefined or minimally processed oils, which retain more of their natural components, can trigger digestive issues like food poisoning-like symptoms or affect liver function. This is especially true if there is any sensitivity to things like particular fatty acids, certain proteins, or even small residues of contaminants that might remain in less processed oils. The change you’ve experienced since 2016 might be due to several factors; your body’s physiology can undergo changes over time, altering the way it processes fats or how sensitive it is to certain compounds. You could also have been exposed to certain infections or environmental factors that affected your liver or digestive health, making you more susceptible to issues with certain oils. It’s important to monitor how your body reacts and try to identify specific oils that cause these symptoms, keeping track of any particular brands or types. Eating refined oils might be less problematic because they have a reduced complexity of components that could cause issues. However, the same unrefined oils in small, controlled amounts might be tolerated due to a lower burden on the digestive system. To mitigate these effects, focus on moderating your intake of potentially problematic oils, ensuring a diet that’s overall balanced and gently increasing the fiber or other digestively supportive nutrients, like probiotics, while avoiding those oils you know cause issues. If symptoms persist or become severe, it would be wise to consult with a gastroenterologist or a healthcare providers to rule out any specific intolerances, allergies, or gastrointestinal conditions that might require more targeted management.
