Doctors’ responses

Weight gain can be challenging, especially with a history of liver issues and a past stomach infection. At 5’11" and weighing 50 kg, your body mass index suggests that you’re underweight. Depending on your medical history, particularly past liver swelling, it might be essential to first rule out any underlying conditions or ongoing liver issues. A visit to your doctor for detailed evaluations, including liver function tests and possibly imaging like an ultrasound, would be a reasonable first step. Assuming your liver and gastrointestinal system are functioning normally, there are nutritional and lifestyle strategies you could try. Eating high-calorie foods that are nutritionally dense can be beneficial. This means focusing on whole foods like nuts, seeds, avocados, and healthy oils. Try incorporating several small meals and snacks throughout the day, aiming for three large meals with additional snacks in between, rather than just increasing portion sizes at main meal times—this can sometimes be more manageable if you’re not used to eating a lot. Including a mix of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats in every meal can provide balanced, sustained energy and support muscle building. Strength training exercises can also help to build muscle mass, which can contribute to weight gain, so consider adding regular resistance training to your routine if you haven’t already. However, before making significant changes, consulting a dietitian who can provide personalized guidance may be beneficial. If any symptom changes, like fatigue, jaundice, or abdominal pain, arise, it’s crucial to seek medical advice promptly.
