Doctors' responses

The pain in your left leg could be arising from various causes, ranging from circulation issues to nerve problems. Given your age and the context you’ve provided, it’s essential to consider common conditions like arthritis, peripheral artery disease, sciatica, or even nocturnal leg cramps. Since the pain reduces with exercise, it might suggest musculoskeletal issues, such as osteoarthritis or muscular tension. Before recommending any specific medication, it’s crucial to determine the exact cause of your pain. Over-the-counter pain relievers like acetaminophen or NSAIDs (e.g., ibuprofen) may offer temporary relief, but they should be used cautiously, especially given your age, as they can have side effects on the stomach, kidneys, or cardiovascular system. Incorporating gentle stretching exercises, as you’ve already noticed benefit from them, could be very helpful.

Consult your doctor for a thorough assessment. They may recommend diagnostic tests such as X-rays to evaluate the bones and joints or an MRI for a detailed view of the soft tissues, if there’s suspicion of a herniated disc affecting a nerve. Blood tests might also be suggested to check for inflammatory markers or circulatory issues. It’s important to ensure that no serious underlying condition is present, such as peripheral artery disease, which can increase your risk of heart attack or stroke if untreated. Also, sudden or severe pain, swelling, redness, or if it significantly disrupts your sleep or daily activity, you should seek immediate medical attention. It’s vital to balance exercise and rest, maintaining mobility without overstraining the leg, and make sure you’re using appropriate footwear that supports your feet and ankles. If you’re currently on other medications or have additional health concerns, inform your doctor to avoid any drug interactions or contraindications.
