Gaining weight, especially in a hostel setting, while maintaining a budget can be challenging but definitely achievable with some strategic planning. First, it’s important to focus on increasing your calorie intake through nutrient-dense foods, which means getting more calories for each portion you consume. Incorporate foods like nuts, seeds, and full-fat dairy which are calorie-rich but don’t require eating large amounts. Think of snacking on things like peanut butter with whole-grain bread or a small handful of almonds throughout the day. Within your hostel meals, try to have larger portions, especially focusing on foods like rice, bread, potatoes, and protein sources like beans or eggs, if available. A good strategy is to include a source of protein in each meal, even if it’s small. Eggs, canned fish, or yoghurt can be cost-effective options.

When it comes to exercises, focusing on resistance training or bodyweight exercises can be beneficial. Since hostel space is usually limited, exercises like push-ups, pull-ups, squats, and lunges are excellent for building muscle without needing much room. These exercises help in strengthening and adding muscle mass, rather than just gaining weight from fat. Try to set a schedule, maybe three to four times a week, dedicating at least 20–30 minutes each session to these exercises. Remember, rest is equally important as it allows muscles to recover and grow.

It’s good to pay attention to drinking enough fluids, but try not to consume them in large amounts before or during meals so that you can consume more calories rather than filling up on liquids. Since you’re actively trying to put on weight, consider consulting a healthcare professional or dietitian to ensure you’re not missing any essential nutrients. They can help tailor a plan to you personally, considering your current dietary provisions and any other specific needs you might have. Keep an eye on your weight gain process; consistent, gradual increases are a sign you’re moving in the right direction. If you experience any physical or emotional symptoms you’re concerned about, it’s advised to seek medical attention. Good luck with your weight gain journey!
