Doctors’ responses

For managing acne and excessive hair growth associated with PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome), a comprehensive approach is needed. PCOS can result in hormonal imbalances contributing to these symptoms. Firstly, addressing your acne: dermatologists often recommend topical treatments such as retinoids or benzoyl peroxide. These can be combined with oral medications like antibiotics or hormonal treatments, such as combined oral contraceptives, which can help regulate hormone levels and subsequently alleviate acne. Always consult a healthcare provider before starting these treatments to personalize them to your needs. As for the excess hair growth, known as hirsutism, one effective approach could be using anti-androgen medications, which help reduce the effect of male hormones that can cause excessive hair growth. Again, this needs to be discussed with a healthcare professional to ensure it’s safe and suitable for you. Lifestyle modifications often play a crucial role in managing PCOS symptoms. This may include maintaining a healthy weight through regular exercise and a balanced diet, as weight loss can improve symptoms for many with PCOS. Insulin resistance is common in PCOS, so focusing on a low-glycemic index diet can also be beneficial. If you’re dealing with hirsutism, temporary hair removal methods like waxing, shaving or using depilatory creams are options; more permanent solutions like laser hair removal can be considered but consult with a dermatologist regarding potential benefits and risks. For acne on the body, regular gentle exfoliation with salicylic acid or glycolic acid products may help keep pores clear. It’s essential to be cautious to avoid excessive irritation. Monitoring menstrual cycles and other symptoms like weight and mood swings can provide clues about hormone levels and should be discussed with your doctor. They may propose further evaluations such as blood tests to assess hormone levels and suggest ovarian ultrasound if needed. Ultimately, working closely with a healthcare provider experienced in PCOS is crucial to tailor a treatment plan that addresses both immediate concerns and long-term health.
