Doctors’ responses

Having persistent back acne, or “bacne”, can be frustrating, particularly when topical treatments like soaps, washes, lotions haven’t solved it. Addressing this issue might require a multi-faceted approach, considering both skincare products and lifestyle adjustments. First, it’s essential to ensure proper hygiene: shower after sweating and wear loose-fitting clothing to reduce irritation. Sometimes, overproduction of oil or clogged pores are part of the challenge, so using a salicylic acid-based cleanser can help; it works to exfoliate and clear the pores. Additionally, benzoyl peroxide is a common and often effective over-the-counter treatment, helping to kill acne-causing bacteria and reduce inflammation. Apply it carefully on the affected areas after cleansing, but be aware it may bleach fabric and could initially cause dryness—start slow to assess your skin’s reaction. For more persistent acne, prescription options might be needed. A dermatologist might suggest topical retinoids, which can help unclog pores and improve skin turnover. In certain cases, oral medications like antibiotics or hormonal treatments are considered; these address underlying bacterial infections or hormonal imbalances contributing to acne. Also, review your diet and lifestyle—reducing dairy and high-glycemic foods, while managing stress, might have a positive impact. Finally, if acne appears to worsen, or is associated with symptoms like severe redness or scarring, it’s wise to see a dermatologist. They can offer specific treatments like chemical peels or laser therapy tailored to your condition. Keep in mind that consistency with these measures is key, as significant improvement can take several weeks to months.
