Doctors’ responses

Persistent hair fall and dandruff can be frustrating, but addressing the underlying causes can be key. Hair fall can be due to a number of factors like genetics, stress, nutritional deficiencies, hormonal changes, or scalp conditions. Dandruff is often related to an overgrowth of a yeast-like fungus called Malassezia, inflammation, or seborrheic dermatitis. First, consider evaluating your diet to ensure you’re getting enough proteins, vitamins (especially biotin, vitamin D, and B12), and minerals like zinc and iron. Including foods rich in these nutrients can help support healthy hair growth. Maintaining a balanced diet plays a crucial role in overall hair health.

For topical treatments, switching shampoos frequently might not be beneficial. Try using a medicated shampoo containing ketoconazole, selenium sulfide, or zinc pyrithione, which can help reduce dandruff and associated inflammation. Use it two to three times a week, leaving it on your scalp for 5 to 10 minutes before rinsing. For hair strengthening, consider applying products with ingredients like minoxidil, which can promote hair regrowth, though it takes several months to see results and should be used continuously. Over-washing or using very hot water can strip natural oils, so aim for lukewarm water and don’t wash your hair daily— two to three times a week might be adequate.

Stress management techniques like exercise, yoga, and adequate sleep can also be beneficial. Be mindful of hair styling habits; avoid tight hairstyles, minimize heat styling, and use gentle combs. Finally, if dandruff and hair fall persist or worsen, it’s a good idea to consult a dermatologist. They can assess for conditions like psoriasis, eczema, or alopecia and recommend targeted treatments or medications that may be necessary.
