Niacinamide is a great start for combination skin, as it helps with sebum regulation and reduces inflammation, which can be quite useful for managing hormonal acne. Since your issue seems to be the post-acne marks (also known as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation or PIH), adding other actives might help speed up the fading process. Consider incorporating a product with alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), such as glycolic acid or lactic acid, into your nighttime routine. These exfoliants work to accelerate cell turnover, helping fade those dark spots over time. Start with a lower concentration if you’re new to acids, using it 2-3 times a week, and gradually increase frequency if your skin tolerates it well.
Additionally, consider including a vitamin C serum in your morning routine. Vitamin C can brighten the skin and further aid in fading hyperpigmentation. For hormonal acne that pops up before your period, incorporating a salicylic acid cleanser used 2-3 times a week can help since it unclogs pores and reduces inflammation, but don’t mix it on the same day you use other exfoliants like AHAs to avoid irritation. As always, wear sunscreen daily since UV exposure can worsen pigmentation. Look for a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher, preferably one that includes anti-inflammatory ingredients like niacinamide or zinc oxide. Consistency is key with these treatments, so give them time to show results—typically several weeks. If over-the-counter interventions aren’t making the impact you’re looking for, consulting a dermatologist for more potent treatments like retinoids or professional procedures might be beneficial. Always patch test new products and consider any personal allergies or sensitivities.
