Doctors’ responses

When dealing with persistent acne, it’s important to approach it from multiple angles. For acne that’s not responding to over-the-counter creams, you might want to consider a few focused treatments. First, topical retinoids such as adapalene or tretinoin can be beneficial; they help unclog pores and reduce inflammation. Applying a thin layer to clean skin once daily, preferably at night, can be effective. However, these can cause dryness, so using a non-comedogenic moisturizer afterwards is a good idea.

In case your acne is moderate to severe or very inflammatory, oral antibiotics like doxycycline or minocycline might help by decreasing bacteria and inflammation. For women, oral contraceptives or anti-androgens (like spironolactone) can sometimes balance hormones that exacerbate acne.

It’s crucial to pair any medication regimen with a consistent skincare routine: gently cleanse your face twice daily with a mild cleanser, avoid picking or squeezing pimples to prevent scarring, and apply sunscreen daily as acne medications may increase sensitivity to sunlight. Overuse of multiple acne products simultaneously can irritate skin – be cautious.

If you’re also dealing with scarring, dermatological procedures such as laser therapy or chemical peels might be an option, but they’re more specialized and need consultation with a dermatologist. Avoid heavy makeup that may clog pores, and check your haircare products too; sometimes oils in shampoos can exacerbate forehead acne.

Finally, if your current regimen isn’t effective or if acne is painful, enlarging, or deeply inflamed, a review by a dermatologist is recommended. They can offer personalized treatments that suit your skin type and adjust your medications accordingly. Please ensure any new treatment is supervised by a healthcare provider to monitor for potential side effects, especially with oral medication.
