Doctors’ responses

You might be dealing with a common case of acne, which can occur even if you’re using a simple facewash and avoiding makeup. The area under the nose has a high concentration of sebaceous glands, which can produce excess oil and get clogged with bacteria or dead skin cells. This results in the formation of a pimple. The redness and pain you felt are due to inflammation, while the white pulp or pus indicates the body’s immune response trying to expel the bacterial buildup. Factors like hormonal changes, stress, diet, and even genetics can influence the occurrence of acne in specific facial areas. For immediate relief, avoid squeezing or picking at the pimple as it might lead to scarring or further infection. You can apply a topical treatment containing benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid, which are easily available over-the-counter. These can help to reduce inflammation and clear the blockage in your pores, but apply them sparingly to avoid dryness. Incorporating a gentle exfoliating agent, like a facewash with alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), twice a week may prevent dead skin buildup. Make sure to moisturize with a non-comedogenic (won’t clog pores) moisturizer to keep your skin balanced. If your pimples persist or worsen, or if you develop other symptoms—like fever, spreading redness, or multiple painful lesions—you should consult a healthcare provider. There’s a possibility of needing prescription medication or further investigation for potential underlying causes. Making small lifestyle adjustments, such as managing stress and maintaining a healthy diet with low sugar and dairy intake, could also contribute to controlling acne.
