Doctors’ responses

To address your concerns about dandruff, hair fall, and premature greying, it’s crucial to consider several aspects including your PCOS diagnosis. Dandruff is often caused by a yeast called Malassezia or from dryness, and managing it typically involves using medicated shampoos containing ingredients like ketoconazole, selenium sulfide, or zinc pyrithione. Use these shampoos as instructed, typically allowing the product to sit on the scalp for 5-10 minutes before rinsing. If dandruff persists, a dermatologist consultation may help explore other causes, such as psoriasis or eczema. Hair fall and lack of growth might be linked to PCOS, which can cause hormonal imbalances affecting hair. Addressing PCOS often involves lifestyle modifications, like a balanced diet and regular exercise to manage weight and insulin levels, or medications such as metformin or hormonal treatments. Targeting the hormonal imbalances can sometimes improve hair health. Including foods rich in vitamins (especially B vitamins, iron, and zinc) can support hair structure. Premature greying can be attributed to genetics, nutritional deficiencies like low vitamin B12, stress, or, in your case, potentially PCOS. Testing for vitamin levels may provide insights into possible deficiencies. Supplementing with B12, biotin, and iron, if needed, could help, but it’s best to do this under medical supervision. With PCOS, observing signs of excessive hair loss, significant scalp irritation, or sudden changes warrants further medical evaluation. Sometimes dermatologists collaborate with endocrinologists to create a well-rounded care plan. While there is no reversing premature greying, professional advice on nutritionally supporting hair can improve overall health. As for your skin condition, absence of acne is positive but watch for other PCOS-related symptoms such as excessive facial hair or weight changes, as they too can affect overall hormonal balance.
