Doctors’ responses

Cystic acne on the neck can be frustrating and may be caused by hormonal changes, stress, or genetic factors, among others. It’s essential to ensure that any skincare or hair products you’re using aren’t contributing to clogged pores, as sometimes oils and fragrances in products can trigger acne. Managing cystic acne often involves a combination of approaches. If you haven’t already, consider consulting with a dermatologist. They may suggest treatments like topical retinoids, benzoyl peroxide, or even oral medications like antibiotics or isotretinoin for more severe cases. It’s key not to pick or squeeze the cysts, as this can exacerbate inflammation and increase the risk of scarring or pigmentation. For the dark spots, which are known as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, patience combined with a targeted treatment can help. Using products containing ingredients like niacinamide or vitamin C might assist with gradual fading of these marks. Over-the-counter creams that include ingredients like glycolic acid or azelaic acid can promote skin turnover and improve hyperpigmentation. Consistent use of sunscreen is crucial to protect your skin from further pigmentation. You’ll want to apply broad-spectrum sunscreen daily, particularly on the affected area, regardless of the weather, to prevent darkening of the spots. It may take several weeks before you notice improvement, and gradual is key. If hyperpigmentation persists, a dermatologist might suggest other options like chemical peels or laser therapy. It’s vital to maintain a gentle skincare routine that nurtures, rather than irritates, your skin and to avoid any harsh scrubs or abrasive products that could hinder healing. If at any time the acne becomes painful or shows signs of infection like increased redness or pus, seek medical attention to avoid complications. Balancing lifestyle factors such as diet, sleep, and stress management can also support your overall skin health.
