Doctors’ responses

Dealing with frequent pimples, especially those that are painful and red, can be uncomfortable and frustrating. Pimples, or acne, occur when hair follicles become clogged with oil and dead skin cells. Causes can include hormonal changes, stress, dietary factors, or the use of certain skincare products. Since you’re also experiencing back acne, these factors might be contributing to both. For managing the acne on your face and back, start with a consistent skincare routine: gently cleanse twice daily with a mild cleanser that’s non-comedogenic (won’t clog pores), and use over-the-counter treatments containing benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid which help reduce inflammation and kill bacteria. Be careful not to over-exfoliate as this can worsen acne. If your acne is associated with pain or redness, you might be dealing with inflammatory acne. Applying a warm compress can help soothe the pain and reduce redness. Avoid picking or popping pimples as this can lead to infection or scarring. Since the acne is affecting nerve areas and causes significant pain, these might be cystic type acne, which often requires more intensive treatment like prescription medications. It could be worth consulting a dermatologist to discuss if treatments like topical retinoids or oral medications might be necessary. Sometimes, acne can be a sign of an underlying condition or hormonal imbalance, particularly if it’s severe or persistent. Consider keeping a food and symptom diary to identify and address potential triggers, such as diet or stressors. If the pain or symptoms worsen or you notice swollen areas, pus, or fever, it’s important to seek medical attention to rule out any infection or other serious conditions. Prioritizing a healthy lifestyle—adequate rest, balanced diet, and stress management—can also support acne treatment.
