Persistent constipation can be quite frustrating, especially when underlying tests come back normal. It seems you’re doing the right things with hydration, but let’s explore some additional approaches. First, consider your dietary fiber intake. Foods high in fiber—such as whole grains, fruits, and vegetables—can help bulk up stool and promote bowel movements. Aim for 25-30 grams of fiber a day. If implementing this naturally proves challenging, you might consider a fiber supplement. Alongside this, ensure you’re drinking enough water to work with the increased fiber—sometimes aim for 8-10 glasses of water per day. Next, check in on your physical activity levels. Consistent exercise, even just regular walking, can stimulate intestinal activity. If these strategies haven’t provided relief, a gentle over-the-counter laxative might be warranted temporarily, like polyethylene glycol. However, prolonged use of laxatives is not recommended without medical supervision, so please approach this cautiously. Also, evaluate your current medications, as some can contribute to constipation. If constipation persists despite these strategies, or if you notice symptoms like weight loss, severe abdominal pain, or blood in stool, it’s crucial to seek further evaluation from a healthcare provider to eliminate any underlying conditions that might not have been picked up in initial tests.
