There are several effective approaches for acne that have persisted despite over-the-counter treatments, so you’re not alone in navigating this. Chronic acne often requires a more targeted action plan. First, it’s essential to identify potential triggers or aggravators, including dietary factors (e.g., high-glycemic diets) and stress. Consider consulting with a dermatologist who can assess your skin type and acne severity properly. A dermatologist might also explore prescription options like topical retinoids or antibiotics to reduce inflammation and bacterial proliferation. These are often more potent than store-bought products and can target the root causes of acne. For persistent or severe cases, oral medications such as doxycycline or isotretinoin can be considered; however, these come with specific considerations you’ll want to discuss with a health professional regarding potential side effects. Besides, hormonal evaluation can be beneficial since hormonal imbalances often underlie acne, particularly in females. In some cases, hormonal therapy may be warranted. Common agents include oral contraceptives or spironolactone which have anti-androgen effects. Additionally, treat skin with a focus on gentle care to avoid aggravation from over-exfoliating or using harsh products. Consistency with sunscreen helps minimize dark spots; those with breakouts should opt for non-comedogenic formulations. Chemical peels or laser therapies are also advanced techniques to treat scarring and might help improve overall skin texture. Since everyone’s experience with acne can differ greatly, a collaborative approach with a healthcare provider tailored to your unique situation will usually yield the best outcomes.
