Doctors’ responses
Swelling and itching in the vulva, especially around the labia minora, can have several causes, and it’s essential to get to the root of these symptoms for proper management. Since you’ve noticed these symptoms before your period and this time they persisted throughout the cycle with an additional cut, it’s worth considering different factors. Common causes include yeast infections, bacterial infections (like bacterial vaginosis), allergic reactions, or irritants from personal care products. The timing around your menstrual cycle might point towards hormonal changes influencing these symptoms. It’s good you noticed improvement with the v wash, but if itching and swelling persist, let’s explore further. For now, avoid potential irritants: use unscented detergents, stay away from tight clothing, and avoid fragranced products in the vulvar area. Keeping the area dry and clean is essential; try to wear breathable underwear like cotton. Since you mentioned a wound or cut that healed, it’s crucial to rule out conditions like dermatitis or injury from scratching. Avoid scratching as it might worsen irritation or introduce infection. OTC antifungal creams can be tried if a yeast infection is suspected, but persistence or worsening should prompt you to see a healthcare professional. This helps to get a proper diagnosis, possibly requiring a swab test or an examination to check for yeast, bacterial infections, or skin conditions like eczema. Should symptoms escalate or if there’s significant pain, fever, or a pus-filled discharge, consult a healthcare provider without delay, as these might indicate a more serious condition needing timely intervention.
