Doctors’ responses

Hair loss and thinning can indeed be frustrating, and several factors could be contributing to this. Dietary changes, stress, hormonal imbalances, and nutritional deficiencies are common culprits. You mentioned a recent weight loss, which can sometimes lead to decreased intake of essential nutrients. Ensuring adequate protein intake and including nutrients like iron, zinc, vitamin D, and biotin in your diet is critical. Iron is particularly important, as low iron levels are closely linked to hair thinning. Consider getting a blood test to check for deficiencies in iron and other key nutrients—if deficient, your doctor might recommend supplements. Hormonal changes are another factor to consider; conditions like thyroid imbalances or polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) can affect hair. Evaluate stress and sleep, both essential for healthy hair growth. Chronic stress can exacerbate shedding, so maybe explore stress reduction techniques like exercise or mindfulness. Also, be gentle with your hair—avoid harsh treatments, tight hairstyles, and use a wide tooth comb to minimize breakage. Switch to a mild shampoo and conditioner free of sulfates and parabens. If these adjustments don’t help, it’s important to consult with a dermatologist or trichologist. They might conduct an examination or recommend treatments such as topical minoxidil, which is FDA approved for androgenic alopecia. Keep mind these steps might need time to show results, and gradual improvement is more likely than an immediate solution.
