Doctors’ responses

Uterine prolapse in a 17-year-old is quite unusual, typically more common in older women, so it’s important to confirm the diagnosis and explore the reasons why this may be happening. Given that the prolapse is not visibly evident but can be felt, it suggests a mild to moderate condition. Often, the recommendation for pelvic floor exercises or Kegels is standard, strengthening the muscles supporting the uterus. However, if exercises aren’t helping, it might be worth exploring other non-surgical options. Sometimes vaginal pessaries are used to support the uterus and improve symptoms. These are devices fitted inside the vagina, helping to hold the uterus in place. It’s critical to have this fitted by a healthcare professional to ensure it’s appropriate and effective. Considering your age, the prolapse could potentially relate to connective tissue disorders or congenital support defects, so a more detailed assessment by a gynecologist specializing in prolapse might be necessary. Addressing menstrual irregularity is equally important as it might correlate with hormonal imbalances or other underlying conditions that could affect the pelvic support. If periods are consistently short, an evaluation of hormonal levels may be prudent. Regular follow ups are key in tracking any changes or progression in symptoms, which can guide further management decisions. At your age, managing these symptoms with non-invasive methods is preferable until you’re older and your body and lifestyle have stabilized. If symptoms worsen or lifestyle impacts more significantly, then surgery might be considered later on, with thorough counseling on potential risks. Being proactive with management by maintaining a healthy weight, avoiding strenuous activities that increase abdominal pressure, and continuing guided exercise is advisable while seeking specialized advice for tailored treatment.
