Kajal Verma

From last 3 days I'm suffering from massive itching in my vaginal area. It started just after my period ended on Monday I use menstrual cup in my periods from last one and half year and it's never affected me this way. I'm very comfortable using menstrual cup and yes i used cotton pads for 2 days to avoid any leakage.

Doctors’ responses

Vaginal itching and irritation can be quite bothersome and might be related to a number of underlying causes. Given the timing right after your period, and the use of different menstrual products, it’s possible you’re experiencing a mild yeast infection or contact dermatitis. Yeast infections are common around menstrual cycles due to hormonal changes affecting pH balance. Over-the-counter antifungal treatments like miconazole or clotrimazole can be effective if a yeast infection is the cause. Follow the instructions on the package for good results. Contact dermatitis, on the other hand, may occur because of an allergic reaction to materials in menstrual products. A temporary switch to hypoallergenic menstrual products might help, and washing the area with mild, fragrance-free soap can further reduce irritation. Avoid using any harsh soaps or any feminine hygiene sprays, as these can often exacerbate irritation.

If the itching persists for more than a week, or if you notice other symptoms like unusual discharge, foul odor, or significant pain, it’s best to schedule a visit with your healthcare provider. They might need to conduct a physical examination or laboratory tests to rule out other conditions like bacterial vaginosis or STIs. Wearing breathable cotton underwear can also reduce irritation by allowing air circulation and minimizing moisture retention. Finally, keep track of any other products you use in your genital area, as lotions, lubricants, or even laundry detergents can sometimes contribute to irritation and allergies. Always ensure to follow-up with your physician if symptoms worsen or you feel uncertain about home remedies.
