Gaining weight in a healthy way, especially when appetite is low, can be a bit of a puzzle, but it involves a few key strategies. First, focus on calorie-dense foods that provide more energy without having to increase the volume of food you’re eating significantly. Incorporate more healthy fats into your diet, like avocados, nuts, seeds and olive oil. These can boost calorie intake in smaller quantities. Consider adding liquid nutrition like smoothies or shakes, which can be easier to consume and digest. Mix in protein powder, full-fat yogurt, nut butter, or even oats to enhance both calories and nutrients. It’s important to space your meals throughout the day, aiming for smaller, frequent meals rather than sticking to just three large ones. This can make eating feel less overwhelming. On the medical side, it’s worthwhile to check for potential underlying issues that might be affecting your appetite or metabolism. Get your thyroid function tested (like TSH, FT3, FT4) to rule out hyperthyroidism, which can increase metabolism and affect weight. It’s also prudent to check for any gastrointestinal conditions that might affect nutrient absorption, such as celiac disease or IBS, and consider getting a full blood count and nutrient levels checked – vitamin D, iron and vitamin B12, which can also influence energy and appetite. Lastly, the possibility of an underlying psychological component like anxiety or depression impacting your appetite and eating habits shouldn’t be overlooked. If any of these tests indicate an issue, addressing them with a healthcare provider can be crucial for effective weight gain. If you continue facing challenges despite these steps, consulting a nutritionist or specialist may provide further personalized guidance tailored to your specific needs.
