Doctors’ responses

Irregular periods during the teenage years are not uncommon, especially in the first few years after periods begin. Menstrual cycles can vary as the body adjusts its hormonal balance. However, if there’s a notable change in the pattern that persists for more than a few cycles, it’s worth considering a few potential causes and steps to address the irregularities. Factors such as stress, changes in weight, or diet might alter the cycle. Ensuring a balanced diet that includes plenty of iron-rich foods (like leafy greens, beans, or lean meats) and maintaining a regular exercise routine can contribute to menstrual health. While lightweight periods are not necessarily a concern unless accompanied by other symptoms, it’s important to rule out anemia by keeping an eye on symptoms like fatigue or breathlessness. Hormonal imbalance is another factor that can affect period regularity. It might be useful to track the cycle closely for a couple of months using a period tracking app to identify any patterns or additional changes. In some cases, conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or thyroid dysfunction can play a role, both of which generally require medical assessment. Consulting with a healthcare provider would be appropriate if irregularities continue or any worrisome symptoms appear. Remember, any severe pain or excessive bleeding should be evaluated promptly, as should any sudden changes in health status. This ensures any necessary interventions, such as hormone therapy or lifestyle adjustments, can be suggested and applied safely and effectively by a medical professional.
