Doctors’ responses

After getting your stents inserted in the coronary arteries, it’s crucial to take some specific precautions and make lifestyle adjustments to ensure a smooth recovery and manage your Type 2 Diabetes effectively. Since your blood sugar levels are still on the higher side, even though there is an improvement in HbA1c, maintaining control over diabetes is a priority. Start by following your cardiologist’s specific recommendations, particularly regarding medication. Medications like antiplatelets are usually prescribed to prevent clot formation in the stents. Managing your blood sugar involves both medication and lifestyle. Continue with your diabetic medications as prescribed, but also pay attention to your diet. Aim for a balanced diet, rich in whole grains, lean proteins, and vegetables, while avoiding high-sugar and high-fat foods. Keep your carbohydrate intake consistent to help control blood sugar levels.

Regarding exercise, once your doctor has given you the clearance, you can gradually resume normal activities. Usually, light walking can be resumed within a week or so after the insertion of stents, but it really depends on individual factors such as personal recovery rate and the doctor’s assessment. Avoid strenuous exercises and heavy lifting until cleared by your physician, as this can put a strain on your heart. Light yoga could be beneficial, especially breathing exercises, as long as it does not include intense pressure or inversions. It’s typically safe to start gentle activities around 1 to 2 weeks after the procedure, building up intensity based on medical advice. Monitor blood sugar regularly, especially before and after exercises, as physical activity can affect your glucose levels. Always keep a fast-acting carbohydrate with you while exercising, in case of hypoglycemia. Regular follow-ups with your healthcare provider are essential to monitor both your cardiac and diabetic conditions, making any necessary adjustments to your treatment plan.
