Doctors’ responses

To address your father’s high triglycerides, there are a few areas to consider to help lower those levels more effectively. With triglycerides at 800, it’s crucial to take some actions. First, even if his diet is generally good, it can still play a big role in managing triglycerides. Try incorporating more omega-3 fatty acids into his diet, such as through fish like salmon or even fish oil supplements, as they can help reduce triglyceride levels. Limiting the intake of refined carbohydrates and added sugars can also be beneficial, even if his current diet is low in sugar; sometimes hidden sugars can still be a culprit. Reducing alcohol intake is really important too; even occasional consumption can significantly affect triglyceride levels, especially when they are already elevated. In terms of physical activity, while walking is great, increasing the duration or intensity could provide more benefit in lowering triglycerides. Encouraging regular brisk walking or introducing other forms of exercise may help. The use of statins is positive, as they can lower cholesterol and, depending on the type, might also impact triglycerides. However, sometimes additional medication, such as fibrates or niacin, might be considered, especially at his levels, so it’s worth discussing this with his healthcare provider. Monitoring his blood pressure and keeping it in check along with all these adjustments can contribute overall to better cardiovascular health, which is crucial at his age. Regular follow-up and lab tests to monitor the triglyceride levels and overall health status with his healthcare provider would be essential to ensure these interventions are effectively working. Always involve his physician when considering making significant changes to his treatment plan or if you notice any bothersome symptoms.
