Doctors’ responses

Experiencing such intense symptoms can be really concerning. From what you’ve described, it sounds like you might have had a severe anxiety or panic attack, possibly exacerbated by your existing asthma and the medications you’re taking. Anxiety attacks can cause various physical symptoms, including rapid heart rate, difficulty breathing, muscle tension, and even a feeling of detachment from reality, known as depersonalization. These sensations can be terrifying, and since you already have asthma, it’s important to be cautious, as anxiety can trigger asthma symptoms.

First and foremost, if you haven’t already, consider reaching out to a healthcare professional right away, especially if you are still experiencing breathing difficulties. This is crucial as it could be an emergent situation requiring prompt medical intervention. Have a plan in place for asthma attacks; your current asthma actionl plan should include steps to manage sudden symptoms and determine when you need to use your rescue inhaler or seek urgent medical help.

Regarding the mental health aspect, lifestyle adjustments could also assist in managing anxiety and depression symptoms. Regular, moderate exercise like walking or stretching or even gentle yoga can be really effective in relieving tension and improving mood. Breathing exercises might be double-beneficial since they can help both your asthma symptoms and anxiety. You could practice diaphragmatic breathing, which is slow and deep breathing that encourages full oxygen exchange. Aim for a regular sleep schedule, which is equally crucial. Limiting caffeine, especially later in the day, and alcohol can make a meaningful difference too.

Lastly, ongoing therapy or counseling may be necessary for addressing the mental health concerns. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is often recommended for anxiety and can be very effective. Discuss the potential benefits of therapy or adjusting your treatment plan with your healthcare provider. They could also evaluate your current medication to rule out any side effects or interactions, particularly concerning your PCOS medication, which might contribute to the symptoms you’re experiencing.

Remember, addressing both the physical and mental health aspects simultaneously tends to result in the best outcomes, and seeking regular follow-up is paramount.
