Doctors’ responses

Dr. Bharat Joshi
I’m a periodontist and academician with a strong clinical and teaching background. Over the last 4 years and 8 months, I’ve been actively involved in dental education, guiding students at multiple levels including dental hygienist, BDS, and MDS programs. Currently, I serve as a Reader at MMCDSR in Ambala, Haryana—a role that allows me to merge my academic passion with hands-on experience. Clinically, I’ve been practicing dentistry for the past 12 years. From routine procedures like scaling and root planing to more advanced cases involving grafts, biopsies, and implant surgeries. Honestly, I still find joy in doing a simple RCT when it’s needed. It’s not just about the procedure but making sure the patient feels comfortable and safe. Academically, I have 26 research publications to my credit. I’m on the editorial boards of the Archives of Dental Research and Journal of Dental Research and Oral Health, and I’ve spent a lot of time reviewing manuscripts—from case reports to meta-analyses and even book reviews. I was honored to receive the “Best Editor” award by Innovative Publications, and Athena Publications recognized me as an “excellent reviewer,” which honestly came as a bit of a surprise! In 2025, I had the opportunity to present a guest lecture in Italy on traumatic oral lesions. Sharing my work and learning from peers globally has been incredibly fulfilling. Outside academics and clinics, I’ve also worked in the pharmaceutical sector as a Drug Safety Associate for about 3 years, focusing on pharmacovigilance. That role really sharpened my attention to detail and deepened my understanding of drug interactions and adverse effects. My goal is to keep learning, and give every patient and student my absolute best.

Acne, especially in teenagers, is a complex issue influenced by hormones, genetics, lifestyle, and skincare habits. While seeking a permanent fix can be challenging, there are strategies that might help in significantly improving or managing the condition over time. Understanding the root causes is key. Hormonal changes often play a huge role during adolescence, and balancing these might lessen severity. When it comes to treatment, consistency is crucial. Research-backed ingredients like benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, and retinoids have proven beneficial for many. You might find these in over-the-counter products or through a prescription from a healthcare provider. Using these should be done carefully, as they can sometimes irritate the skin if used improperly. Follow the product’s guidance and monitor for any adverse effects.

Speaking of lifestyle, diet can impact your skin more than you’d think. Reducing intake of high-glycemic foods (like sugary snacks) and increasing antioxidant-rich items (like fruits and vegetables) might make a difference. Drinking enough water and maintaining a balanced diet can support skin health. Stress reduction is another underrated strategy, as stress can exacerbate acne. Sleep, mindfulness practices, and exercise could help in this area. When it comes to dark spots, sometimes referred to as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, adding products with ingredients like vitamin C or niacinamide can help fade these over time. Patience is essential here since results might take weeks or months.

Since you’ve tried multiple products and seen dermatologists, consulting an endocrinologist might identify any hormonal factors needing attention. Also, consider revisiting a dermatologist who might explore treatments like chemical peels or laser therapy if the topical treatments haven’t worked. These can sometimes offer more significant and lasting improvement. Be cautious with natural remedies or trendy online advice as they may not always be evidence-based or safe. Remember, managing acne involves a combination of right skincare routines, possibly medical treatments, nutrition adjustments, and lifestyle changes. Keep those doctor appointments and make sure any treatment plan is clearly understood and properly followed.
