Doctors’ responses

Persistent difficulty gaining weight and experiencing nausea with eating can be concerning and could originate from several underlying causes. First, it’s crucial to assess for gastrointestinal conditions like gastroparesis, where the stomach empties too slowly, or other disorders like peptic ulcers or intestinal obstructions. Conditions like celiac disease or inflammatory bowel disease may also contribute to digestive symptoms and poor absorption of nutrients. Analyzing your eating habits, food intolerances, stress levels, and even psychological factors like anxiety or an eating disorder can also be insightful, as these factors can influence how well you eat and digest foods. Being underweight, particularly at your height, can lead to weakened immune function due to insufficient nutrient intake. It’s vital to take concrete steps: arrange for a comprehensive medical evaluation, including blood tests for deficiencies (e.g., iron, B12, and vitamins D), hormonal levels, and possibly imaging studies to understand digestive concerns better. Consultation with a gastroenterologist could provide more targeted insights. Meanwhile, try consuming smaller, more frequent meals rather than larger ones, which may be easier on your system. Slowly introducing calorie-dense but easily digestible foods like avocados, smooth nut butter, or bananas may help. Stay cautious with shakes—use ones without dairy if lactose intolerance is suspected. Aim for a diet that’s rich in variety to support your immune system and overall health. A registered dietitian can further guide food choices tailored to your tolerance levels. If symptoms persist or worsen—urgent re-evaluation is needed, especially to rule out more serious conditions that might require prompt intervention.
