Your boyfriend’s anxiety after a breakup, accompanied by substance use and recent weight loss, suggests a multifaceted issue that needs careful attention. Initially, it’s important to identify any triggers that might contribute to his nighttime anxiety—this could include stressors from daily life, residual feelings from the breakup, or even the process of trying to quit substances like smoking and alcohol. While he’s made strides in avoiding these substances, withdrawal symptoms can still occasionally manifest, potentially fueling anxiety and affecting sleep. Weight loss and physical weakness are concerning, especially over a period as short as 6-7 months. This could result from anxiety affecting appetite, metabolism, or both. He should consult a healthcare provider to evaluate potential underlying health issues such as thyroid problems, nutritional deficiencies, or any gastrointestinal concerns. A balanced diet plays a crucial role here; ensure he’s getting enough calories and essential nutrients; incorporating lean proteins, healthy fats, and whole grains can help maintain energy levels and support weight maintenance. Additionally, introducing behavioral-cognitive strategies such as relaxation techniques could mitigate anxiety, particularly before bedtime. Practicing mindfulness or guided meditation via apps or online videos might prove beneficial. Encourage regular physical activity, which can naturally relieve stress and improve sleep quality. To address persistent anxiety, consider consulting a mental health professional for cognitive-behavioral therapy or exploring medication options under medical guidance. Keeping alcohol and cigarettes at bay is vital, as they can exacerbate anxiety and disrupt health. Addressing these elements can support both mental and physical health improvement.
