Doctors’ responses

To start gaining weight, especially given your height and current weight, it’s crucial to first consider any underlying issues or medical conditions that might be affecting your ability to gain weight or your appetite. If you haven’t already, consult with a healthcare provider to rule out conditions like hyperthyroidism, celiac disease, or any other metabolic disorders. Assuming there are no underlying medical issues, the next step is to focus on your diet and lifestyle to promote weight gain. Begin by slowly increasing your caloric intake; aim to consume around 300-500 extra calories per day. Focus on calorie-dense foods like nuts, seeds, avocados, and oils. Incorporate more protein sources, such as lean meats, eggs, and legumes, to help build muscle mass. If you find it hard to eat large amounts at once, opt for several small, frequent meals throughout the day. Drinking smoothies or nutritional shakes can be an easy way to add calories without making you feel too full. Regular physical activity, particularly strength training, can aid in muscle gain and improve appetite, making it easier for you to maintain a higher calorie diet. Additionally, maintaining a consistent sleep schedule and managing stress through mindfulness or light exercise can positively affect appetite and overall health. Keep track of your progress and make adjustments as needed, but be patient with the process—healthy weight gain is gradual. If appetite fluctuations continue, a dietitian can provide individualized strategies to further support your goals.
