Doctors’ responses
Do not stop antibiotics without doctor’s advice (stopping early can worsen infection).
Contact your prescribing doctor and tell them about the ribcage pain. They may:
Change the antibiotic/syrup Check your liver and kidney function tests Do an ultrasound abdomen/kidney if needed. Drink plenty of water (2.5–3 L/day) unless restricted. Avoid alcohol and spicy/oily foods while on antibiotics.
Hello Shreya,
I understand your concern.
The reasons might be - Side effect of the syrup, Muscle spasm or gastritis, or spreading of infection.
My advise - Stop the syrup for now, and inform your treating doctor about this reaction. BUT DO NOT STOP THE ANTIBIOTIC MEDICATIONS, they are very important for your recovery. Continue drinking plenty of water. You can apply warm compress to the painful area, if it’s a muscle pull, it’ll get relieved by this.
If the pain worsens, or you develop fever, vomiting, yellow eyes or severe abdominal pain, physically visit a doctor immediately. There might be need for physical examination and further tests.

Pain in the right-side ribcage after taking medication for UTI could be due to side effects of the medicine, irritation of the kidneys, or even unrelated causes like muscle strain. Since severe ribcage or flank pain can indicate kidney involvement or other complications, it should not be ignored. Please consult your doctor immediately to assess the pain, review your medications, and rule out kidney or other serious issues.
Hello dear See it seems the side-effects of medications Usually the antibiotics kill the natural flora of our body which results in either constipation or diarrhoea along with bloating or vomitting I suggest you to please consult the concerned physician for change in medication Please don’t stop medications on your own Hopefully you recover soon Regards
Hi Dear Shreya It might be due to dehydration Kindly adequately hydrate yourself If pain on touch needs local analgesic cream for pain As such medications causing pain is unlikely Take care
Hi Shreya,
This pain may be due to : Side effect of the medicine Kidney involvement Gastritis Liver stressed due to medication
Drink plenty of water. Take medicine only after food
Since it started after taking medication, Please consult your doctor and get tested LFT and RFT , to rule out . Your doctor may change your medicine as well.
Feel free to talk dear Thank you
Experiencing rib cage pain following the intake of medication could have a few potential causes. One possibility is that the medication has triggered an allergic reaction or side effect causing inflammation or discomfort in your rib cage area. Medications for urinary tract infections (UTIs), particularly antibiotics, occasionally cause various side effects which can include abdominal or musculoskeletal discomfort. It’s also important to consider if you’ve changed any other routine recently, as things like posture or new exercises can sometimes translate into unexpected pain in the rib area. However, pain in your rib cage could also be unrelated to the medication itself and might be coincidental or related to the underlying infection. Infections, especially those that spread beyond the urinary tract, can potentially cause referred pain to different body areas, including the rib cage, as they may affect other organs or cause general inflammation. It’s crucial to pay attention to whether you’re experiencing other symptoms alongside this pain, such as difficulty breathing, fever, or severe abdominal discomfort, as these could signify a more serious condition that requires medical evaluation. I would advise contacting your healthcare provider to discuss the symptoms you’re experiencing. In the meantime, keep track of any additional symptoms, avoid any activities that might exacerbate the pain, and consider whether this occurred strictly after the medication. If the pain worsens suddenly or is accompanied by symptoms like shortness of breath, you should seek immediate medical attention.
