How to stop loose motions instantly?

Kian

I am really struggling with this issue, and it's driving me crazy. Last week, I had this whole plan to go on a mini trip with friends, but outta nowhere, I started having loose motions. Like seriously, it hit me outta the blue. I’d just eaten some street food that looked kinda sketchy, and now I am regretting my life choices. It’s been two days, and I'm constantly running to the restroom. I’m already feeling weak and a bit dizzy. I know hydration is super important, but I am desperate for help. How to stop loose motions instantly? I tried some over-the-counter stuff but it doesn't seem to be working at all! Also, my stomach feels all gurgly and weird, like a constant reminder that I should not have even looked at that food. I read that avoiding dairy and greasy foods might be a good idea right now, but what else? Is there anything I can do at home that's safe and quick? Or do I need to go to a doc right away? I hate feeling like this. I wanna enjoy my trip, not spend it in the bathroom. Seriously, how to stop loose motions instantly? Any tips would be great!

Doctors' responses

For stopping loose motions, the immediate focus is on rehydration and understanding potential underlying causes. Since you’ve already tried over-the-counter medication and it’s not working, let’s focus on another couple practical and safe approaches. First, ensure that you’re staying adequately hydrated. This means drinking an oral rehydration solution (ORS), which can be bought from a pharmacy, or made at home by mixing one liter of water with six teaspoons of sugar and half teaspoon of salt. Sips it slowly and frequently. This will help maintain your electrolyte balance which is crucial especially as you’re feeling dizzy and weak. Next, consider dietary adjustments. Avoid dairy, caffeine, alcohol, and greasy or spicy foods as these can worsen symptoms. Instead, try some bland options like the BRAT diet - bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast - which are gentle on the stomach. These can help firm up stools due to their binding properties.

If the loose motions are accompanied by severe pain, high fever, or bloody stools, it’s important to seek medical attention urgently as these could be signs of a more serious underlying condition like an infection or inflammatory bowel disease. If the stools are purely watery but persisting beyond a couple of days and are causing distress or dehydration symptoms, visiting a healthcare provider can help identify if further treatment or testing is needed. Avoid antibiotics unless prescribed, as they aren’t typically needed except in cases of bacterial infections. Meanwhile, continue monitoring your symptoms, remain hydrated, and eat carefully. If these simple measures do not alleviate the situation, arranging to see a physician might be necessary. Remember that while managing symptoms can provide temporary relief, understanding the root cause is key to prevention and long-term management.
