Which fruits are good for dengue?

Aditi

I am feeling super worried because my friend just got diagnosed with dengue, and it's really making me think about how to help him. He’s been suffering from high fever, terrible body aches, and all that. I was just reading about nutrition and wondering which fruits are good for dengue? Like, what’s really beneficial? I heard that fruits like papaya can help boost platelet levels, but is that really true? Also, what other fruits should he be eating? Should we focus on stuff like oranges or bananas too, or are those not as helpful? He’s not feeling like eating much, so just curious about which fruits are good for dengue that are actually tasty and easy to eat. Plus, are there any fruits we should definitely avoid when someone has dengue? I just wanna make sure he gets better, you know? It’s frustrating to see him in pain and not fully understand how food plays into things. Any practical tips on which fruits are good for dengue would be super helpful right now! Thanks in advance!

Doctors' responses

When someone is battling dengue, nutrition is a crucial component of their recovery process. Among fruits, papaya often gets attention due to anecdotal claims about its leaf extract boosting platelet counts, but there’s limited clinical evidence supporting this. Papaya itself, however, is nutritious and can be included as part of a balanced diet. Oranges, which are high in Vitamin C, can help support the immune system, and their high water content is great for staying hydrated—a critical aspect of managing dengue. Bananas are also a good choice; they’re easy to digest and rich in potassium, which can help ease the muscle cramps associated with dengue. Other fruits such as pomegranates, which are high in iron, and kiwis, with more vitamin C, can also be beneficial. In general, any fruit that’s comfortable to eat, rich in vitamins, and hydrating can be advantageous. Watermelon and coconut water are excellent for hydration needs. Avoid any fruits that might upset the stomach or are hard to digest, as digestive issues can sometimes accompany dengue. Encourage him to eat small, frequent meals if appetite is low, ensuring a good intake of fluids and balanced nutrition. Fruits complement hydration—vegetable soup and oral rehydration solutions are also key. Most importantly, your friend needs to follow the healthcare provider’s advice closely, as dengue can escalate rapidly. Repeated medical follow-ups are essential to monitor platelet levels and overall condition. If symptoms worsen, immediate medical attention is necessary.
