Which fruit is best for dengue? - #12010

Rian

I am really worried about my brother because he just got diagnosed with dengue last week and he’s been feeling pretty lousy. He’s been running a high fever and has some serious joint pain, plus he's really tired all the time. His doctor mentioned staying hydrated and eating well but didn’t really specify what kinds of foods or fruits might help. I heard something about the importance of fruits for dengue recovery, but like, which fruit is best for dengue? I’ve read that papaya is commonly recommended, but I’m not sure if that’s the absolute best option. He’s on a pretty restricted diet right now due to nausea and we’re trying to entice him to eat anything that can help boost his platelets and help him feel better. Could watermelon or oranges be beneficial too? Are there fruits that we should avoid? I just want to make sure I'm giving him the right nutrition during this tough time. Which fruit is best for dengue? How often should he be eating these fruits, or is there a limit? I’m just feeling a bit lost and I am hoping for some solid advice from you all.

While no single fruit can “cure” dengue, certain fruits can support recovery by boosting hydration and nutrition, which is crucial during dengue fever. Papaya is popular because of its potential benefits in increasing platelet counts, which can drop in dengue patients. Papaya leaf extract, specifically, has been studied for this; however, fresh papaya itself is a good source of vitamins A, C, and folate, helpful for immune support. Watermelons can be excellent as well for hydration due to their high water content, and they’re easy on the stomach, which helps if nausea is an issue. Oranges and other citrus fruits are fantastic too, providing vitamin C, which supports immune function. There’s no strict limit to how much fruit he should eat, but balance is key—focusing on variety ensures he’s getting a range of nutrients. Encourage small, frequent meals over large ones if his appetite is poor. Avoid anything that can irritate the stomach too much or is difficult to digest, like overly acidic foods in excess. Keep a lookout for any signs of severe dehydration or bleeding, as these are reasons to seek immediate medical care. If his platelet count is significantly impacted, or he exhibits severe symptoms, professional medical intervention might be necessary. Monitor his condition, prioritize hydration with fluids like oral rehydration solutions, and consult with healthcare providers for personalized recommendations.
