Stomach pain and vomiting home remedies - #12019

Aadhya

I am having this really frustrating issue with stomach pain and vomiting. Like, out of nowhere, I started feeling this sharp pain in my abdomen a couple of days ago, then came the vomiting. Ugh. I thought maybe it was something I ate, but even after avoiding all the heavy stuff, the stomach pain and vomiting keep coming back! Last night was terrible – I couldn’t sleep at all because of the stomach pain, and then I ended up throwing up again. I don’t want to keep running to the doctor and I’m hoping for some good stomach pain and vomiting home remedies. I tried sipping ginger tea, but it didn’t really help much. Is there something else I can do at home? I just need to find a way to ease this stomach pain and stop the vomiting, you know? I’ve looked up some home remedies, but everything seems so vague. I wonder if anyone has real life experiences that helped them with stomach pain and vomiting at home. I mean, I’m also kinda stressed about missing work and just want this to stop! Any advice would be super appreciated!! Pls help!

Doctors’ responses

Addressing stomach pain and vomiting can be challenging, especially when the cause isn’t obvious. The first thing to remember is if these symptoms are severe, persisting, or associated with additional red flags like high fever, dehydration, or bloody vomit, it’s crucial to seek medical attention promptly. Assuming the cause is something benign, like a mild viral gastroenteritis or food indiscretion, there are some supportive measures you might try at home to help manage your symptoms. Start with staying hydrated; it’s essential. Try sipping on clear fluids like water, an oral rehydration solution, or diluted non-citrus fruit juices in small amounts at regular intervals. This will help prevent dehydration, which can worsen vomiting. Avoid caffeine, alcohol, and anything too hot or too cold. As you’ve tried ginger tea, you could also consider peppermint tea—which can sometimes ease gastrointestinal discomfort, though results vary among individuals.

Introduce a bland diet once vomiting subsides, starting with light, easily digestible foods like plain toast, rice, applesauce, or bananas. This is commonly referred to as the BRAT diet (Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, Toast). Avoid fried or greasy foods and highly seasoned or spicy options until you fully recover. Over-the-counter antacids may offer some relief for stomach pain related to acidity, but ensure you’re not taking anything without checking if it’s appropriate for your situation, especially if you’re on other medications. Ginger capsules, as an alternative to ginger tea, may also have additional anti-emetic effects. Rest is crucial; stress and fatigue can exacerbate stomach issues, so giving your body time to recover is vital. Elevating your head when lying down can help reduce nausea and prevent acid from coming back up the throat, minimizing discomfort.

If symptoms persist, or you notice new symptoms like jaundice, significant weight loss, or severe abdominal tenderness, these may indicate a more serious condition such as gallstones or an ulcer, requiring a doctor’s intervention. It’s wise to avoid any medication or supplement without professional guidance if symptoms are persistent, as they may obscure serious conditions and delay necessary treatment. Identifying specific triggers or patterns leading to these episodes, diet-wise or activity-wise, can be enlightening and helpful for prevention in the future. Keep monitoring your condition closely, and don’t hesitate to seek medical care if things don’t improve or get worse.
